While there are a large number of research institutions in India, an overwhelming portion of them are located in New Delhi, the country’s capital, due to its role as a major policy and research hub. A handful of other institutions are also located either in North India or other major metropolitan cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai. Again, while a number of such institutions are also making efforts to play a consulting role, they are yet to impact policy formulation. Further, there are hardly any well-established and acknowledged Indian consulting/geo-political/market intelligence/risk analysis institutions.
As India rapidly rises to be a major global player in the 21st century, there is a pressing need to enhance synergy between the Government, Industry, Academia, Media and other boarder Civil Society Organisations. There is also a growing realisation that policy research needs to also be driven from the different regions beyond the country and state capitals. Put simply, there is a need for an institution within India’s strategic thought domain that thinks well ahead of the curve.
It is in this context, that RISET Foundation has been established in Coimbatore to bring together perspectives from across the region. This location is geographically well connected, in distance and time, to the major cities of all states in the larger region - Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi in Kerala; Chennai in Tamil Nadu; Amravati in Andhra Pradesh; Hyderabad in Telangana; Bengaluru in Karnataka; and Goa – enabling it to fully access and utilise the vast intellectual and technical resources available. Coimbatore has a number of educational institutions, already grooming the next generation of vibrant student population, that focuses on the study of technical, natural and social sciences.
The city is also renowned as the ‘Manchester of South India’ for its well established industrial base including textiles, engineering and machinery, auto components, information technology, jewellery and food processing. Coimbatore is a border city at the tri-junction of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala making it critical from a geo-strategic perspective for security. The presence of extremist elements and trafficking of drugs are two significantly prevailing challenges. This city is also one of the important nodes in Tamil Nadu for India’s second defense corridor after Uttar Pradesh. It is home to an Air Force base (Sulur), a naval leadership training establishment (INS Agrani) and proximate to a prominent college (Wellington) of the Indian defense forces.
